Make Your Own Chemical Free Cleaning Products At Home

Updated on May 18, 2013

Save money making Earth friendly cleaners at home

There are so many 'Earth friendly' products on the market these days that shoppers cannot keep track of them all. With the economy in a slump, spending more money on these products is not really a priority for penny pinching consumers. The best way to save money and be 'green' is to make your own cleaning products at home.

Laundry Detergent Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 gallons (7.5 litres) hot water + extra for covering the soap in the first step
  • 1 bar Bath Soap e.g. fels naptha (grated)
  • 2 cups Washing Soda

Instructions

  1. Grate the soap into a saucepan and add enough hot water to cover. Stir over a medium-low heat until it looks like all the soap is melted.
  2. Pour the 2 gallons of hot water into a large container, such as a bucket, then add the melted soap and stir well.
  3. Add the washing soda, stirring well again

To Use

Use 1/2 cup per full load of laundry or 1 cup for a very soiled load.

Ingredients from Amazon

Sometimes the washing soda can be hard to find at the store. Buying this washing soda is much better value when buying in bulk.

Ingredients

1 cup hot water

1/2 cup baking soda

1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide

Directions

Mix ingredients. Add clothes and soak for 20 minutes to overnight. Rinse; wash as usual.

If possible, try to test an area of the clothing in case any discoloration occurs.

Make this recipe as you need it. Do not save any for later use. Any leftover would lose its potency over time.

Makes 2 cups.
